Wayne Harrison, then the Artistic Director of The Sydney Theatre Company, very kindly invited me - just before I finished my three years at NIDA - to appear as Frid in that company's production of Sondheim's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. This was at the end of 1990.
It meant missing out on Industry Week, which is the culmination of the three year course. That was a risk - a lot of agents and casting directors come to see the students and their monologue showcase in that week - but it was an offer I couldn't refuse. I was 26 and heading straight into the actual industry.
The stars were Geraldine Turner and John Waters.
I played opposite a young girl by the name of Toni Collette, who played Petra. Watching her in rehearsal was one of 'those' moments. I remember Geraldine watching Toni rehearse her song "The Miller's Son" and saying somthing along the lines of "there's something about that girl...."
